9.30 Fly - 9.30 Fly (1972)

9.30 Fly - 9.30 Fly (1972)

UK Progressive which was released on the highly collectable Ember record label 1972. The album offers good UK folk-rock with the pleasant male/female harmony voices of Michael and Barbara Wainwright.
In November 1972 the group had a gig with The Velvet Underground in Malver Winter Gardens. Shortly after that 9.30 Fly vanished without a trace. Nowadays the selftitled record is a difficult-to-find rarity.

Barbara Wainwright – Vocals, Electric Piano
Lyn Oakey - Guitar
Gary Charman - Bass
Mike Clark - Drums

7th Temple - Under The Burning Sun (1978)

7th Temple - Under The Burning Sun (1978)

The label says: "Over the last 18 months we at Radioactive have reissued some of the rarest private pressings in existence. Albums by Summer Sounds (500), Fraction (200) and Totty (50) were all extremely limited, but these are huge numbers when compared with our latest release, Under The Burning Sun by Canadian prog rockers VIIth Temple. If obscure albums were steak, they couldn’t come any rarer than this!
A copy of Under The Burning Sun recently sold on ebay, and the vendor’s comments really sum it up:
'This is the last of seven known copies!!! I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing this as I don’t want to be the one to break the seal. This is the second copy I’ve had as I know the person who found all seven and that copy went on ebay for $600." To the best of our knowledge, 15 copies of this 1978 private pressing were actually produced which suggests that fewer than 50 people have ever heard this album.
A select group indeed. And more remarkably, this is a great recording, full of prog keyboards, synths and guitars. The lyrics are dark and mystical, and there’s a brooding, ethereal feel to proceedings. At only just over 18 minutes the album’s a tad on the short side, but what we do get to hear leaves the listener yearning for more. An obscure rarity and a musical gem rolled into one. Highly recommended.'"

3's A Crowd - Christopher's Movie Matinee (1968)

3's A Crowd - Christopher's Movie Matinee (1968)

3's a Crowd was a folk rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, that existed from 1964 to 1969. The group is particularly notable for its association with Cass Elliott, who co-produced the group's sole album release. The album remains one of Elliott's rare associations as a record producer.

The group was formed in 1964, and was originally called the Bill Schwartz Quartet (though no one named Bill Schwartz was actually in the group.) The group consisted of Donna Warner, Trevor Veitch and Brent Titcomb. In 1966, the group moved to Toronto, released two singles, and acquired new members Richard Patterson, David Wiffen and Comrie Smith. Smith was later replaced by Ken Koblun. In 1967 and 1968, 3's a Crowd played the folk music clubs in Southern California, including the Ash Grove in West Hollywood and the Ice House in Glendale, sometimes bringing Jim and Jean as an opening act.

In 1968, they recorded Christopher's Movie Matinee, their only album. The band broke up shortly after its release. The album was produced by Cass Elliot and Steve Barri. Bruce Cockburn, who briefly joined a later version of the group, does not perform on the album, though four of his songs are included. Donna Warner was the primary singer, but other band members, particularly David Wiffen and Brent Titcomb, also sang lead. They did a slow, military rendition of "(Let's) Get Together" by Chet Powers, and had a minor hit with their own song "Bird Without Wings". A signature tune at their concerts was their song "Wasn't It You". Noted reviewer Richie Unterberger considers the album to be "an average, melt-into-the-crowd pop-folk-rock album, somewhat similar to The Mamas & the Papas and We Five (though closer to the We Five)." He also notes the presence on the record of Ken Koblun, Canadian bass player, associate of Neil Young during his early career and sometime bass player with Buffalo Springfield. Koblun had chosen to join 3's a Crowd rather than continue with an early version of the Buffalo Springfield.

A related documentary, Christopher's Movie Matinee, under the sponsorship of the National Film Board of Canada, was released in 1968,using some of the same songs and some of the same musicians. The film is about 1960s Canadian counterculture.

The band reformed briefly in 1969, and appeared on a Canadian variety television program entitled "One More Time". By this point, however, none of the three original members remained in the group; the lineup consisted of Bruce Cockburn, Richard Patterson, David Wiffen, Colleen Peterson, Sandy Crawley and Dennis Pendrith. Cockburn soon left to pursue his solo career, and the group disbanded permanently in 1969. Since then, Bruce Cockburn has had significant success as a solo act, as did Colleen Peterson and, for a time, David Wiffen. Sandy Crawley and Brent Titcomb also developed solo careers, while Richard Patterson, Dennis Pendrith and Trevor Veitch continued their careers as accompanists for many years after the breakup of the group. Donna Warner did not continue her music career after her departure from the group. Comrie Smith's subsequent involvement as a professional musician does not appear to have been documented, although he was quoted extensively by "Mojo" magazine in a feature article about the release of Neil Young's "Archives" CD boxed set - because Smith had backed Young on some of the early recordings. (Young's associations with the group create their own fascinating web, what with both Smith and Koblun playing with him in his early days, and Donna Warner having sung with him in Toronto.) ~ Wikipedia

3 Hür-El - Hürel Arsivi (1976)

Another fantastic piece of work by this Turkish ethno-psychedelic group, composed by the 3 Hur-El brothers. Recorded between 1970 and 1975, this is their second album and was originally released in very small quantities. Again we have the magic blend of Eastern percussion, fuzz guitar, psych and intense vocals. Don't miss it if you are a fan of Erkin Koray or Turkish psych in general. ~ acidvisions.com

23rd Turnoff - The Dream Of Michelangelo (2004)

23rd Turnoff - The Dream Of Michelangelo (2004)

With beginnings going back to the 1950s, this Liverpool group evolved through the Merseybeat era into being known as The Kirkbys. The band was formed by Jimmy Campbell.

"Campbell started in music at school, forming the band The Panthers. They supported The Beatles in January 1962. The band performed at The Cavern on numerous occasions, and one show, broadcast on Radio Luxembourg, saw them introduced as The Kirkbys, the presenter confusing their name with their home town. The name stuck, and the group released a single, "It's A Crime", in 1966, at the tail end of the merseybeat era.

Campbell moved on from the mersey sound to the newly evolving psychedelic scene, renaming the band to The 23rd Turnoff. The name was taken from the motorway sign indicating the nearby M6 exit.[2] Here he found his Liverpool roots placed him at a disadvantage, with the scene establishing itself in London.[3] Described by Bob Stanley of The Times as "the era's lost songwriter", Campbell wrote a number of songs recorded by other artists. Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, The Swinging Blue Jeans and Rolf Harris all covered songs of Campbell's. Although Campbell did not achieve acclaim in the 60s and 70s, his work later came to be well regarded, with Will Sergeant naming Campbell's single "Michael Angelo", recorded with 23rd Turnoff among his top ten psychedelic records." ~ Wikipedia

1910 Fruitgum Company - Best Of The 1910 Fruitgum Co. (2008)

1910 Fruitgum Company - Best Of The 1910 Fruitgum Co. (2008)

The 1910 Fruitgum Company (often shortened to 1910 Fruitgum Co.) is an American bubblegum pop band of the 1960s. The group's biggest hits included "Simon Says," "1, 2, 3, Red Light," "May I Take A Giant Step," "Special Delivery," "Goody Goody Gumdrops," and "Indian Giver." Guitarist Frank Jeckell claimed to have adopted the name from a candy wrapper that he found in his attic.

The band began as Jeckell and The Hydes in New Jersey in 1965. The original founding members were Frank Jeckell, additional members were Floyd Marcus, Pat Karwan, Steve Mortkowitz, and Mark Gutkowski all from Linden, New Jersey.

During 1967, the band was signed to record label Buddah Records, where they released five LPs under their own name and a variety of singles, as well as appearing on the LP The Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus, which sounded like the usual Buddha studio band in spite of its promotion as a "bubblegum superjam". Their first successful single, "Simon Says", was written by Elliot Chiprut, but Jeckell persuaded the band to record it. During the process they changed the beat and patterned the song after "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. "Simon Says" soon became a success, scoring a maximum of #4 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track peaked at #2 in the UK Singles Chart. The record sold over three million copies globally, earning gold disc status. It was heard in the 1968 Frederick Wiseman documentary High School.

The band started touring, opening for major acts such as The Beach Boys. They followed on to release the hits "1, 2, 3, Red Light" (U.S. #5), "Indian Giver" (U.S. #5), "Goody, Goody Gumdrops" and "May I Take a Giant Step."

Early during the 21st century, originator Frank Jeckell and Mick Mansuetto put the act back together which included Floyd Marcus, original drummer along with a few musicians and started touring again. They performed a concert on November 17, 2007 at the Caravan of Stars XIV, in Henderson, Tennessee. Also appearing at the show were Dickey Lee, Jimmy Gilmer, Carol Conners (of The Teddy Bears), Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, Jim Yester (of The Association), Jerry Yester (of The Lovin' Spoonful), Eddie Brigati (of The Young Rascals), and Dennis Tufano (of The Buckinghams).

Their recordings of "Simon Says" sold three and a half million; plus "Indian Giver" and "1, 2, 3, Red Light" both sold over one million copies; and were all awarded gold discs. ~ Wikipedia

Greek hard progressive rock/psych with incredible guitar work and great vocals. Greek lyrics. Incredibly rare and sought after collector's item which was originally released in a very small quantity, now it's available again as a limited reissue. ~ acidvisions.com

The 4 Levels of Existence "The 4 Levels of Existence" official CD reissue of stunning ultra rare Greek psychedelic hard rock collector record. From the mastertapes reissue featuring 10 songs!

The label says: "The first ever official CD reissue of an album that many people consider to be the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded, a belief that would mean that the Four Levels of Existence LP would supercede albums by artists like Axis, Aphrodite's Child, Socrates, and George Romanos. We'll let you decide the argument, for of one thing there is no doubt that this is tremendous hard edged psychedelic/progressive material, originally released in a very small quantity by the private Venus label from 1976. As band leader Athanasios Alatas said: Through Nick's musical quest, Mario's sensitivity, Christos's madness, and my thoughts, we create many songs, all characterized by a psychedelic music sound, Greek lyrics, and monumental guitar solos.

This carefully documented reissue contains the entire Four Levels of Existence LP (its reissue debut), the only recordings they ever made. A twenty-four page booklet includes historical background on the Greek music scene of the early 1970's, details of the band's past written by Alatas, rare photos of the group, as well as lyrics to all the songs in both Greek and English. This CD edition is very strictly limited to 1,000 copies."
