Various Artists - Wondrous Stories: A Complete Introduction To Progressive Rock (2010)

Charting the rise and popularity of progressive rock from its psychedelic routes in the 1960s through to it’s heyday in the 1970s, Wondrous Stories features all the biggest artists and tracks of the genre. The compilation includes artists such as Genesis, Caravan, Mike Oldfield, Yes, Peter Gabriel and Jethro Tull. Progressive Rock is one of the most loved and frequently debated of all musical genres. This 52 track collection is a worthy addition to Universal's much-loved A Complete Introduction To Series. Compliled by Jerry Ewing, the editor of Classic Prog magazine, it takes us on a magical, leisurely journey through the corners of this wondrous genre. For those who think it's all about pixies and trippy guitar solos, think again (although both of those are here). I think the lack of bands like Pink FLoyd are due to licensing rights, not due to oversight. It's just like the Rhino Records "No Thanks" punk rock anthology...no Sex Pistols. In fact, it was called "No Thanks" because that was the response they got when asking the Pistols to take part in the box set.
