Artist: The 4 Levels of Existence
Album: The 4 Levels of Existence
Label: 2005 Lion Productions ( LION 604 )
Released: 1976
Genre: Heavy Psych

Greek hard progressive rock/psych with incredible guitar work and great vocals. Greek lyrics. Incredibly rare and sought after collector's item which was originally released in a very small quantity, now it's available again as a limited reissue. ~ acidvisions.com

The 4 Levels of Existence "The 4 Levels of Existence" official CD reissue of stunning ultra rare Greek psychedelic hard rock collector record. From the mastertapes reissue featuring 10 songs! The label says: "The first ever official CD reissue of an album that many people consider to be the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded, a belief that would mean that the Four Levels of Existence LP would supercede albums by artists like Axis, Aphrodite's Child, Socrates, and George Romanos. We'll let you decide the argument, for of one thing there is no doubt that this is tremendous hard edged psychedelic/progressive material, originally released in a very small quantity by the private Venus label from 1976. As band leader Athanasios Alatas said: Through Nick's musical quest, Mario's sensitivity, Christos's madness, and my thoughts, we create many songs, all characterized by a psychedelic music sound, Greek lyrics, and monumental guitar solos.

Azitis - Help (1971)

Azitis - Help (1971)

It's hard to believe but there was a time when the only guitars ever heard on a gospel album were steel guitars, the organs were pipe NOT Hammond, and the lead singer had long hair because it was the pastor's daughter.

In the late 60s, that began to change as a handful of groups recorded music that was rock and roll with lyrics focused on Christian themes. Azitis (meaning let it be on Earth "as it is" in Heaven) was one of those, a California quartet featuring Don Lower on bass, Michael Welch on guitars and flute, Dennis Sulliven on organ and piano, and Steve Nelson on drums.

The album was conceived as a concept album, taking the Earth from Creation through Judgement Day. Obviously such an ambitious undertaking would be difficult to do well in a single disc, and it isn't really fully realized.

While a 1970 release, it sounds more late 60s thanks to the organ, lengthy tracks, and spiritually searching lyrics, though the guitars here are more restrained than Iron Butterfly, Cream or some of their other late 60s brethren.

Best cuts on here are the warning about phony spiritual leaders in "The Prophet" (which has the gutsiest guitar and some frenzied organ), "From this Place" which probably is the most "acid" of the bunch with plenty of swirling organ and pounding drum, and "Judgement Day" which turns into a loping bass and flute groove about halfway in.

The CD has two early singles for Capitol records (While still recording under the name "Help") as bonus tracks. Of the two, "Questions Why" is clearly superior and probably the most commercial of any of the tunes on the CD.

The big downfall for the CD is sound quality. The band's official site claims this was remastered from original master tapes but if it was the remaster was poor. Every track has what sounds like the pops and clicks you get with a vinyl LP. The sound isn't awful...but it sounds like a decent LP copy rather than a true remastered CD release.

This will be of interest primarily to those interested in the beginnings of the Christian rock scene and fans of late 60s era rock.

3. Who's to Blame

Atomic Rooster - In Hearing Of (1971)

Atomic Rooster - In Hearing Of (1971)

Reviewer: Kim Fletcher
In 1969 keyboard wizard Vincent Crane and drumming sensation Carl Palmer, left mid tour of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown's debut American tour citing irreparable differences with the man himself Arthur Brown, not perhaps the most thought through idea in Rock'n'Roll, but sometimes a musician has to do what a musician does.
Upon arrival back in England it was decided to put a band together around these two musicians, like minded talents were then sought after, Brian Jones who had just left the Stones was due for a meeting with Vincent Crane the day before he was found drowned in a swimming pool, Rich Gretch was asked but had already hung his star to new supergroup " Blind Faith" with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce was asked as well but was determined to forge out a solo career, when Bruce turned down the bass position John Paul Jones was singled out, but he was already in another heavy metal flyer Led Zeppelin. But all these names does let your mind wander into all the different possibilities that could of happened.
The newly branded Atomic Rooster was rolled out with it's debut album 'Atomic Rooster', (1969) with the relatively unknown Nick Graham completing the trio on Bass. The album met with great critical praise but little commercial success, the album is a bluesy affair with not much notice of the heavy rock carnage that was to come. Nick Graham promptly left, (Atomic Rooster never employed a bass player at any time in their following career, Vincent Crane preferring to play the bass notes on his Hammond organ, rather than trust another fickle bass man.) Followed by Carl Palmer who was lured away to be the "P'' in another supergroup "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.
New recruits were sort and two new Roosters were found John Ducann, on lead guitar, who brought along young skinsman Paul Hammond . Immediate success was to follow with the Rooster taking on the hard heavy metal of the day. In November of 1970 this trio's first album was released " Death Walks Behind You" with it's ground breaking Hammond organ sound from Vincent Crane, guitar thunder from Ducann, and powerhouse drumming from Paul Hammond, Further progress was made when the song 'Tomorrow Night' was plucked from the album as a single and reached the Top Ten. 1971 was to prove to be Rooster's year, when they were right at the front of the heavy metal boom, alongside such luminaries as 'Deep Purple', and' Black Sabbath'. A follow up single 'Devil's Answer' was released and met with even greater success reaching Number Two.
Whilst in the studio recording this album it was decided to expand the line up to four with the addition of a vocalist and the services of ex-Cactus lead singer Peter French were employed ,an excellent choice. Although French's vocals were laid down so late in the day that the artwork for the album had already been done, so his head had to be painted onto the inside artwork at the last minute.
The album "In The Hearing Of" was released in September 1971 and went straight into the Top Twenty. The music is not quite as heavy as that of it's predecessor, but that does not mean it has lost any of it's aggression or grit. Vincent Crane's Hammond organ is not so much in evidence with the piano being used to great effect on a lot of the songs. This is spelled out right from moment go when the Rooster strut their stuff on opener 'Breakthrough', with Cranes hammering piano dominating the song as it pushes it's way into your subconscious, 'Breakthrough' is the perfect opener for this finely selected collection of hard rockin' classics. Of the nine songs on this album (Hit Single' Devils Answer' has been tacked on the end of the original eight album tracks as a welcome bonus) two are instrumentals, only five are sung by new vocalist Pete French, Vincent Crane taking lead vocals on the dark and broody ' Black Snake', whilst 'Devil's Answer' featured the vocals of John Ducann having been recorded before Pete French's arrival. Six songs were written by Vincent Crane, three by John Ducann. One song 'Decision/Indecision' does not even require the services of Ducann's guitar work, with Crane supporting French's emotional vocals on solitary piano, a haunting piece to be sure. Pete French gives a great display as a vocalist on his limited opportunities, but it is perhaps the two rockin' instrumentals, 'A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down' and "The Rock' that would of most pleased the fans from the previous album. The only time during the album that both Vincent Crane and John Ducann actually let go and give it some clout. `In The Hearing Of' was a great follow up to 'Death Walks Behind You.' With great development shown in all parts of the band, but obviously too much development, as each individual wishing to stamp his mark, as is easily seen by the development of each track on this album.
With Vincent Crane insisting upon sole leadership of the band, and his exacting standards, this proved too much for the other musicians in the band and before the end of the year the band had splintered leaving Vincent Crane to keep the Atomic Rooster flag flying , which he did with diminishing results with two more albums' Made In England '(1972) and 'Nice'n' Greasy' (1973) both of which departed from the Hard Rock of yore taking a very different Funk/Rock ' slant with vocalist Chris Farlowe on board, much to the horror of Rooster hard rock fans. Pete French went off and formed Leafhound who recorded ' Grower of Mushrooms (1972) Pete French was never to get the success his vocal talents clearly deserved. John Ducann, and Paul Hammond stayed with their hard rock roots and formed 'Bullet', who changed their name to' Hard Stuff', with John Gustafason on Bass and Vocals, recording two impressive albums for Deep Purples newly formed own record label under the Hard Stuff banner' Bulletproof' (1972) and Bolex Demention' (1973). Heavy Rock's waning popularity put paid to any lasting hopes of Rock immortality though.
In 1980 when Hard Rock made a major comeback The Rooster of 'Death Walks Behind You' fame reunited for another stab at glory, but their day had gone.
The name 'Atomic Rooster' still garners great respect in hard rock circles, but it was really only ' Death Walks Behind You' and 'In The Hearing Of ' that were the real thing. The reformation live album from the Marquee (1980), where funnily enough it is John Ducann's vocals, and guitar that are the most dominant is worth your pleasure if you have an inkling to listen to the live beast. But anything else with the Rooster badge on it is generally advised to be given a wide berth.
The world of Rock'n' Roll is not an easy or kind one. Vincent Crane unable to control his inner demons any longer took his own life on Valentine's Day 1989, He was sadly followed by Paul Hammond who could not cope with life outside of his beloved Rooster in 1991. A Tragic end to a band who could of been huge, one of the biggest. But they did leave behind two marvellous albums as an epitaph.

Atomic Rooster- Atomic Ro-o-ster (1970)

Atomic Rooster- Atomic Ro-o-ster (1970)

Atomic Rooster - Atomic Roooster (1970/2004 Castle Expanded Deluxe Edition)
Artist: Atomic Rooster
Album: Atomic Roooster
Released: 1970/2004
Castle (CMQCD 868)
Genre: Heavy Prog

This 2004 reissue of the first Atomic Roooster LP bests all prior pressings -- domestic and import alike -- with flawless digital remastering, the resurrection of the original running order, as well as five significant bonus sides. The trio of Vince Crane (organ/vocals), Carl Palmer (drums), and eventually Nick Graham (vocals/bass) had formed out of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, where both Crane and Palmer had played key roles on the chart-topping single "Fire." As the former had been Arthur Brown's musical director, it is fitting that he penned the vast majority of the Rooster's initial outing. The songs reflect the author's darker and at times fatalistic demeanor, most directly in the repetitive "What is the point of going on?" chorus that distinguishes the incongruously delicate folkie and pastoral "Winter," or the sardonic sexual superiority of "And So to Bed." These stylistically contrast the forceful "Friday 13th," "S.L.Y.," and "Before Tomorrow." Equally divergent are the horn-driven "Broken Wings" and incendiary jazz fusion workout "Decline and Fall." The latter is an interesting departure as it provides each musician an opportunity to interact with substantive fluidity. When Elektra Records added Atomic Rooster to its roster, Palmer had already flown the proverbial coop, replaced by Paul Hammond (drums), while John Cann (guitar/vocals) had taken Graham's place. Such a considerable shift in personnel convinced the band to have Cann record guitar parts overtop of "S.L.Y." and "Before Tomorrow," as well as redo the lead vocal for "Friday 13th." In North America the album was released with a completely different feel, which was undoubtedly as much a result of the reconfigured tune stack as it was the additions and/or subtractions. The 2004 edition of Atomic Roooster includes the U.S. version(s) of all three and two tunes from a rare BBC Radio appearance by the incipient incarnation performing "Friday 13th" and the not-yet-released "Seven Lonely Streets" (aka "Seven Streets"), which surfaced on the follow-up LP, Death Walks Behind You (1970). [Castle's 2004 reissue has five bonus tracks.]

Line-up/Musicians

- Vincent Crane / Hammond organ, piano, vocals
- Nick Graham / lead vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, flute
- Carl Palmer / drums, percussion

This (and i have this on good authority from the man himself)is supposedly the vast majority of what was supposed to be the second crazy world of Arthur Brown album, of course they split up leaving me thinking what a great album it would have been. Nick Graham just doesn't cut it in this type of music (he went off to join the truely amazing Skin Alley where his singing fitted just perfectly-search out their first three albums great examples of early U.K jazzy/prog)On this he tries too hard and on 'broken wings' well embarassing is, maybe too polite. Nevertheless this album contains some absolute corckers 'banstead''sly''friday 13th' and the keyboard and drum extravanga 'decline and fall' Carl Palmer shows that away from the intricacies of ELP he could rock with the best of them, but the show belongs to Vincent Crane (R.I.P) who's hammond work is exciting and dynamic and the guy could write a great ballad 'winter' when he put his mind to it. John Cann joined soon after and they made the absolute dynamic 'death walks behind you' but this is a worthy beginning.

Arthur Lee - Vindicator (1972)

Arthur Lee - Vindicator (1972)

Prior to forming Love, Arthur Lee was a L.A. hustler, desperately searching for the formula that would make him a star. In the early mid-'60s, Lee recorded some unsuccessful singles including one as the American Four on Selma, a subsidiary of Del-Fi, "Luci Baines"/"Soul Food." He also recorded a session for Rosa Lee Brooks which featured Jimi Hendrix as a session guitarist. Lee found his niche at last when he founded one of the '60s seminal garage/folk/psychedelic bands, Love, in 1965. The band which also featured fellow songwriter and singer Bryan Maclean, recorded three amazing albums for Elektra including Forever Changes, an album that is certainly a contender for best rock album ever made. In 1968, Lee decided to scrap the idea of Love as a real band, kicked out all the remaining members and began recording with pickup bands and sessionmen. The band's and Lee's fortunes quickly declined and Lee, never the most normal person in the best of times, began exhibiting erratic behavior as his drug intake began to take its toll. He recorded more unsuccessful albums as Love, recorded a solo album, Vidicator, in 1972, and began to fade away. Lee would regularly tour and recordings were made of these shows but he rarely returned to a studio or wrote new songs. In 1994, Lee recorded a new single "Midnight Sun"/"Girl on Fire," although the B-side was actually salvaged from an unreleased album Lee recorded with Jimi Hendrix years before. Soon after this Lee's problems with the law took over his life. In 1995, Lee broke into an ex-girlfriend's apartment and tried to set it aflame. He was bailed out by Rhino Records who had just released the Love Story compilation. In 1996, Lee was arrested for shooting a gun into the air during an argument with a neighbor and convicted on a illegal possession of a firearm charge. Thanks to California's strict and sometimes unfair three strikes and you're out law, Lee (who had been convicted of a drug offense sometime in the '80s) was sentenced to eight to 12 years in prison. In 2000, Rhino reissued an expanded version of Love's Forever Changes which served as a reminder just what a huge talent Arthur Lee was in his prime. On December, 12 2001 Lee was released from prison having served six years of his original sentence. Happily for Lee and those who feel he still has some good music left in him, a federal appeals court in California reversed the charge of negligent discharge of a firearm as they found the prosecuter at Lee's trial was guilty of misconduct. He may face a re-trial on the negilence charge, but as of now Lee is free!

Their debut album charted at number 151, but they were effectively scuttled when Relf died of accidental electrocution on May 14, 1976.

Arkham - Arkham (1972)

Arkham - Arkham (1972)

Early 70's Recordings

The few 1970-1973 live tapes represented here are all that remains of one of the most interesting trios in rock. Their instrumentation (organ, bass & drums) makes inevitable comparisons to similar contemporaneous ensembles as Egg, Soft Machine, The Nice, Hansson/Karlsson and Glass, especially on the tracks featuring fuzzbox on the organ (maybe even Caravan!) Yet this band also contains the roots of what would become, in the '80s and '90s, a thriving "dark progressive" scene in Belgium with such bands as Univers Zero, Present, X-Legged Sally, Cro Magnon, Fukkeduk and others.

There are equal measures of fast unison playing in odd time signatures, and moodier group improvisations often in minor keys. Arkham was a unique ensemble at a unique time, and points the way to much that would transpire in the next couple decades.

So why only four stars instead of five? Well, these 30-year old live recordings are a bit dodgy by today's standards, and detract somewhat from an unencumbered enjoyment. Still, to have this group preserved at all is little short of miraculous. (Amazon)

Anno Domini - On This New Day (1971)

So You Want To Be A Rock'nRoll Star".

Andrew Leigh - Magician (1970)

Andrew Leigh was bass player and sung harmonies with Matthews Southern Comfort, Iain Matthews’ band. Leigh appeared on the two ‘band’ albums, ‘Second Spring’ and ‘Later That Same Year’. After Matthews left the band, they continued as Southern Comfort, producing three albums. The first of these, ‘Frog City’, has a version of Leigh’s ‘The Leaving Song’. Frog City is the nearest album to ‘Magician’ in style. ‘Frog City’ also contains my favorite Leigh son, ‘The Passing’ (it’s not available on CD unfortunately, to my knowledge). (Michael Bullen)
