Solo debut by SigneLine Lundstrom alias Bumble B., member of The Smell Of Incense.
Presenting a collection of traditional folk songs from Norway. She plays viola, violin, flute, various bells and she sings. On some tracks she's joined by musicians on pedal organ, indian harmonium, e-bow guitars, sitar, classic & acoustic guitars, flutes and bodran. Limited edition of 400 copies, vinyl only release. Coming with paste-on sleeve artwork by Bumble B. and contains an insert.

Bumble B. is SigneLine Lundstrom. It’s her first solo-album beside her work with The Smell Of Incense. We have here a collection of traditional folk songs from Norway, sung and accompanied mostly solo, with a varied number (and sparse-to-the essence) of acoustic instruments, helped on some tracks by The Smell Of Incense members, and with one track, a trance psych folk track played by the whole of The Smell Of Incense.
I don’t know if it’s appropriate to say, but recently I tried to get the most important albums by Turid together, a folk singer/singer-songwriter from 70’s Sweden. Turid for instance succeeded to combine a singer-songwriter era early Joni Mitchel style with some folk elements. Bumble B. is much more innocent, but her interpretation and choice of folk songs are sung with head and heart to the music, like a songwriter. Above all, I already liked her voice with the psych song group The Smell Of Incense, where her voice had a definite and distinctive folk character already.
One of the most known folk groups from the 70’s from Norway is Folque. They were still pretty traditional compared to the UK folkrock inspirations we all know of now. This group opened up the Nordic folk tradition, with some folkrock elements. The first track of side B, "Varuluv” is inspired by Folque. This track is also much more folkrock, with some electric guitar addition, but with the voice concluding the song essence. Also nice to hear on "Lova, Lova Line” is the use of a sitar, always a very beautiful instrument to combine with a beautiful folk voice. A couple of small tracks are acapella, solo or with some voice arrangements, always strong enough to withstand. The voice of Lundstrom is like a beautiful instrument indeed. Therefore it is not necessary at all to understand the texts being sung. The collection of songs and its interpretations give a very good whole, and give a very nice rewarding listening experience. ARTHUR 'In Search Of' LP (Switzerland, RD, Catalogue #RD 13) Brand new/unplayed copy of limited LP issue (edition of 500 only) of mega-rare early recordings (45 rpm single, unreleased tracks and 1-sided Two:Dot label demo LP release) circa 1968-69 of acid folk/psychedelic music by Arthur (later signed to Tumbleweed Records and at that point recording as Arthur Gee.)
'Long awaited release of this psychedelic/acid folk masterpiece from the North. Arthur started his career in Toronto, Canada as folkie in the mid '60s. In 1969 he went to Colorado and recorded a 1-sided demo LP that surfaced some years ago in collector's circles. It was on Two:Dot, the same label that Hendrickson Roadhouse was on. Only a handful of demo copies were released and sent out to major labels to get a record deal. This happened only later after he signed with Tumbleweed Records and released two albums as Arthur Gee. This first ever official release includes his complete demo LP, unreleased sessions and his mega rare 45 rpm both from before the LP and recorded in Canada. The music can be described as a mixture of Perry Leopold, William C. Beeley and early Pink Floyd (his 45 rpm) which is pure magic. Pressed on heavy audiophile vinyl, ultra heavy old style cardboard sleeve and an insert with a bio witten by Arthur.'

The only solo album from this former Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape cult hero is something of a legend. Cut in four days all by himself, it bombed upon its release in 1969. Nevertheless, Spence's legend has led to devotion from such fans as Tom Waits, Robert Plant, Beck, and R.E.M.. Oar features quiet, stark folk; odd turns of phrase; old-timey shuffles; playful swing; and pretty melodies croaked out from Spence's hoarse voice. Generally, the mood is blissed out, with the occasional apocalyptic dread ("Cripple Creek," "Books of Moses") and dissociated narratives ("Margaret-Tiger Rug," "Lawrence of Euphoria") that came naturally to the poor soul who spent time in psychiatric institutions prior to his death at age 52. This Sundazed reissue includes new liner notes, plus 10 additional tracks, including five previously unissued recordings. --Jason Gross

Alternately heralded as a "soundtrack to schizophrenia" and a "visionary solo effort," Oar became delegated to cut out and bargain bins shortly after its release in the spring of 1969. However those who did hear it were instantly drawn into Spence's inimitable sonic surrealism. As his illustrious past in the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Moby Grape would suggest, this album is a pastiche of folk and rock. In reality, however, while these original compositions may draw from those genres, each song has the individuality of a fingerprint. As a solo recording, Oar is paramount as Spence performed and produced every sound on the album himself at Columbia Records studios in Nashville in the space of less than two weeks. This burst of creativity was directly preceded by a six month incarceration in New York City's Bellevue Hospital after chopping down a door at the Albert Hotel en route to do the same to fellow Moby Grape members Jerry Miller and Don Stevenson. A common motif to this album is the presence of saints and demons. Even the straightforward narratives such as the love ballad "Broken Heart" or "Cripple Creek" — which feature vocal treatments reminiscent of folkie Fred Neil — are bathed in unusual chord sequences and lyrical double-entendre. The majority of the sounds on this long-player remain teetering near the precipice of sanity. Primary examples include "War in Peace," the epic "Grey/Afro," and the sound effect-laden "Books of Moses." Comparisons have been made to Syd Barrett, John Lennon, and Frank Zappa — the latter especially for the intense sonic collage techniques displayed on albums such as Lumpy Gravy and Civilization Phase III. First official issue of this much-loved album of Moody Blues-influenced home recordings from around 1970, from the fertile minds of psychedelic-folk masters Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, but credited to their semi-fictitious group Agincourt; an intricate, dreamy psychedelic album, made all the better by the fragile female vocals on offer from Lee Menelaus; considered a bit more progressive (read: less acoustic, less fluid) than the duo s other albums, with reasonable comparisons often made to the music of Syd Barret or Fairfield Parlour. We at Lion Productions are pleased to have had a hand at making this music available for the first time from the original master tapes! The sixteen-page booklet comes with lyrics and band history, and includes previously unseen photos of the band. The addition of two previously unheard bonus tracks makes this an essential reissue of a private pressing mega-rarity (originals are £1500 or more)! (amazon.com)

This is great! A flute and folk guitar together, similar to a well sung Jethro Tull. Don Partridge, the vocalist appears by himself later in his career. includes Brian Cresswell, Malcolm Poole, and Ian Hoyle. Wizz Jones plays acoustic guitar on four songs, and one of the songs is a Gordon Giltrap cover tune. My favorite song is 'transworld blues' on the first three listens, but I'm sure with repeated turns, this one will offer up many layers of beauty. The front cover artwork is an original painting by David Steele and attracted me to this UK prog/psych record immediately.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for flute - I don't know - but to me this is yet another excellent slice of early 70's UK psych folk. Originally released on the Regal Zonophone label in 1971. Crisp and clear male vocals, prominent flute, dreamy acoustic guitar, and occasional doses of piano, harmonica, vibraphone make for a truly enjoyable listening experience. The 11+ minute "Cross Continental Pandemonium Theatre Company" is one of the higlights of this gem. If you like flute-dominated acoustic progressive psych/folk, you can't go wrong with this.
Accolade were a light acoustic band, formed in 1969 who completely eschewed electric instruments, as they developed a folk / jazz fusion. Notable, perhaps only for the inclusion of Partridge and fellow singer Gordon Giltrap, although the latter remained for only one album. The group recorded two albums and one single, before going their separate ways in 1971.
As musical tastes changed, and the novelty value of a folk music singing, one man band, paled, Partridge retreated to his well-worn path of busking for a living. He had made a big impression in Scandinavia, and moved to live in Sweden in the early 1970s. He made two unsuccessful albums there, before ultimately returning to his homeland. 2nd album by UK band from early 70's. A well mix up of verious styles like folk, jazz, and rock, but psych folk dominated. Wizz Jones was featured on several tracks and the album also a cool return of Made In Sweden's 'Snakes In A Hole' Originally released in 1971 on Regal Zonophone. (Reviews from different sources)

Accolade's one of those short-lived late-'60s/early-'70s English bands that attempted to expand musical boundaries, mixing traditional English folk with some rock influences. In one respect the band (bassist Eden Abba, woodwind player Brian Cresswell, singer/guitarist Gordon Giltrap, drummer Ian Hoyle and guitarist Don Partridge) was quite different from many of their contemporaries - namely they were brimming with talent. Prior to their collaboration in Accolade, both Giltrap and Partridge had enjoyed some solo recognition. Giltrap had released a pair of critically praised solo albums, while Partridge (who was actually working as a street musician (what the English term a busker)), enjoyed a fluke UK hit with the song "Rosie"). Unfortunately, Accolade's pastoral stylings guaranteed instant obscurity in the States. In fact, it's somewhat of a mystery how they even got their 1968 debut released by Capitol (a label hardly renown for its willingness to take a chance on cutting edge sounds).
Produced by Don Paul, 1969's cleverly-titled "Accolade" is hard to accurately describe. Recorded with former Artwoods bassist Malcolm Pool replacing Abba, the collection exhibits a smooth and calming sound throughout. Largely acoustic (though you don't really realize it), material such as "Maiden Flight Eliza" (featuring some weird Mamas and Papas-styled harmonies - we're not kidding), "Prelude To a Dawn" and "Never Ending Solitude" wasn't exactly mainstream rock, nor did it fall under the banner of Fairport Convention-styled English folk. Imagine well crafted cocktail jazz with the addition of a touch of English folk ("Ulyssees") and you'll get a feel for the LP. While that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, the result is actually a fascinating album that we repeatedly come back to. Our favorite tracks? Abba's only contribution, the bluesy "Nature Boy" and the surprisingly hard rocking "Gospel Song".
